Google adds New Security Features for Gmail, Meet and Chat – Additional Security Controls for Admins

Published on

Google introduced new features for the G-Suite family of applications aimed to provide stronger security in Gmail, Meet, and Chat. The company also introduced new ways that help IT admins easily manage and secure devices in the Admin Console.

New Security Feature in Gmail

Google announced Brand Indicators for Message Identification (BIMI) with Gmail that enables organizations that authenticate the emails using Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance (DMARC) to validate ownership of their corporate logos.

Once the validation was done Gmail will start displaying the logo in existing avatar slots in the Gmail UI. For users the BIMI will increase reputation with the source of mail, it enables senders to leverage their brand trust and provide their customers with a more immersive experience.

“We’ll be starting the BIMI pilot in the coming weeks with a limited number of senders, and with two Certification Authorities to validate logo ownership: Entrust Datacard and DigiCert.”

New Security Controls for Meet

The meet is the Google video conferencing platform that lets people connect around the world. Google introduced new features that allow the host to manage who can join meetings and how.

Additionally, the hosts also get advanced safety lock capabilities which let the hosts define the participation method.

If an attendee is ejected from the meeting then they won’t be able to attempt to join the same meeting again by knocking, unless the request from the host.

If knocked multiple times then they are not allowed to send more requests to join the meeting.

Next is the advanced safety lock which lets the host decide methods of joining (via calendar invite or phone, for example), level of participant interactivity and blocks anonymous users.

New Security Features in Chat

Phishing protection enabled for chat, if users shared the link in chat then it will be checked against real-time data from Safe Browsing and flagged if it’s found to be malicious.

Also you able to report and block Chat Rooms if you suspect malicious activity in one. Also automatically detect and limit abusive content.

Easier Management for Admin

More device management included for the admins to manage the devices and service. Admin can control the data exfiltration, run a full scan of all files within Google Drive. the features are available with G Suite Enterprise, G Suite Enterprise Essentials, and G Suite Enterprise for Education customers.
