The State Bar of Texas has confirmed a data breach following the detection of unauthorized activity on its network earlier this year.

According to an official notice, the breach occurred between January 28, 2025, and February 9, 2025, during which an unauthorized actor gained access to sensitive information stored on the organization’s systems.

The intrusion was discovered on February 12, 2025, prompting immediate action to secure the network and initiate an investigation with the assistance of third-party forensic specialists.

Potentially Compromised Information

The investigation revealed that certain personal data may have been accessed or exfiltrated during the breach.

While the specific data elements vary by individual, they include names and other personally identifiable information (PII).

Impacted individuals are being notified directly via written communication.

The State Bar of Texas has emphasized that there is no current evidence of misuse or fraudulent activity involving the compromised data but is urging affected parties to remain vigilant.

Response Measures and Consumer Support

In response to the breach, the State Bar of Texas has implemented additional security measures to prevent future incidents and is reviewing its data privacy policies.

To assist affected individuals, the organization is offering complimentary credit monitoring services through Experian for a specified period.

This service includes features such as credit monitoring, identity restoration support, and identity theft insurance coverage up to $1 million.

Consumers are encouraged to enroll in these services by July 31, 2025, using an activation code provided in their notification letter.

Enrollment does not require a credit card and offers tools for fraud detection and resolution.

Additionally, individuals are advised to monitor their financial accounts and review their credit reports for any suspicious activity over the next 12 to 24 months.

The State Bar of Texas recommends several precautionary measures for those potentially impacted:

  • Credit Monitoring: Enroll in the provided Experian IdentityWorks service for enhanced identity protection.
  • Fraud Alerts: Place a fraud alert on credit files to notify creditors of potential identity theft.
  • Credit Freezes: Consider initiating a credit freeze to restrict access to credit reports without explicit authorization.
  • Regular Monitoring: Review account statements and free annual credit reports for any irregularities.

Consumers can also contact major credit reporting agencies Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion for additional support in securing their financial information.

The State Bar of Texas has reported the incident to relevant regulatory authorities and established a dedicated assistance line for affected individuals.

This breach underscores the importance of robust cybersecurity practices and proactive consumer engagement in mitigating risks associated with unauthorized data access.
