How Hidden Network Gateways Become Attackers’ Favorite Backdoors

Hidden network gateways are becoming the next big corporate cybersecurity threat. Businesses generally focus on firewalls, antivirus, and other endpoint security. That’s why sneaky attackers have changed their approach. They now check for forgotten access points and exploit vulnerabilities.

If you’re wondering what a hidden network gateway is, how attackers can exploit them so easily, how to detect them, and how to enhance defenses, here’s a comprehensive guide.

What are Hidden Network Gateways?

A network gateway is the link between two networks or systems that allows the flow of data. In general, IT teams use network gateways to maintain systems, manage the cloud, and provide remote support.

The issue is when these gateways are not documented or incorrectly configured. Some may even intentionally conceal them. Then, such network gateways serve as hidden backdoors for attackers. These can be easily used by cybercriminals while camouflaging as regular network activity.

Common examples like neglected VPN endpoints, unmaintained proxy services, or poorly secured cloud-hosted jump servers are perfect targets for hackers.

How do Attackers Exploit Hidden Network Gateways so Easily?

Hidden network gateways are attackers’ favorite tool because they can easily exploit them. These are so difficult to detect and prevent, and are easily exploited due to the following reasons:

  • A compromised gateway lets them access the network or system through this established backdoor. They can conceal their access point among the complicated network of legitimate devices and services. It doesn’t matter even if original users reset passwords repeatedly. Statistics show that infostealers stole 1.8B+ credentials in 2025.
  • Attackers also take additional measures, like sending only small and infrequent data packets. These seem like harmless background noise to security systems. They use encryption and port forwarding techniques to mask harmful commands among normal ones.
  • Hidden gateways also use common VPNs, cloud servers, remote administrative tools, and other trusted services. So, their presence seems harmless. Thus, the traffic gets concealed among regular and legitimate activity.
  • Attackers easily route their connection using a relay computer series from different geolocations. This chain complicates the investigation and legal action. As a result, the attacks become more effective.

How to Detect Hidden Gateways?

The steps to identify hidden gateways are listed below:

  • Conduct regular reviews of port-forwarding rules and firewall settings to look for anything unfamiliar or irrelevant.
  • Check the network traffic to track strange computer connections or unusual destinations, especially at odd (non-business) hours.
  • Compare VPN connection records with employee logins. Look out for VPN usage from employees on vacation or who have left the business.

How to Strengthen Defenses Against Hidden Gateways?

The ideal strategies to strengthen defenses against hidden network gateways are:

1. Prioritize Strict Access Controls

Allow users only the minimum required permissions according to their roles. By limiting others’ access to controls and restricting administrative controls, you can significantly enhance defenses.

Instead, only allow authorized personnel to amend gateway configurations and establish remote connections.

2. Secure Remote Connections with Encryption

While preventing hidden gateway creation, you must also consider securing the existing gateways. These are ones used by IT teams to remotely access your network and system for maintenance and other work.

Communications with its remote server are managed via an address that uses port forwarding, increasing its ability to stay hidden from network defenses. Using a VPN with port forwarding can similarly enhance connection flexibility and remote access while maintaining strong encryption for security.

With proper management measures, a VPN will encrypt data and allow the IT team to control who can access the network, when, and where.

3. Segment the Network

Divide the network into multiple smaller secluded zones. This can be a user’s Wi-Fi, a sensitive server VLAN, or a corporate LAN. Implement firewalls and access control lists to regulate traffic among segments.

In this case, even if a hacker can impact one less secure zone, they won’t be able to do further damage. This effectively protects critical data and systems.

4. Implement Rigorous Change Management

In this context, the most effective changes are maintaining a centralized inventory of access points and network assets.

For instance, have a new gateway, cloud tunnel, or VPN? Run a thorough process to formally approve, document its purpose, and schedule future reviews.

Implement automated tools to regularly scan for and spot undocumented or suspicious IT assets.

5. Educate the IT Teams

Train and update the knowledge of your IT and DevOps teams. Cover topics like the dangers of poor cloud service configuration and forgotten test systems.

Share updated information regarding different ways hackers abuse legitimate tools. You can also include simulations to help teams practice security steps every now and then.

Closing Thoughts

Hidden network gateways are a result of neglect. So, all you need to do is conduct more stringent processes and stay vigilant to protect your business against this threat.
