Cyberattack Hits Poland’s Nuclear Research Center

Poland’s National Centre for Nuclear Research recently experienced a targeted cyberattack aimed at its IT infrastructure.

Security teams successfully thwarted the intrusion before malicious actors could compromise critical systems or access sensitive data.

The facility, which houses the country’s sole operational nuclear reactor, maintained full operational continuity throughout the entire security incident.

As cyber threats against critical national infrastructure continue to rise globally, the rapid detection and mitigation of this attack demonstrate the effectiveness of established security protocols.

The primary concern during any security incident at a nuclear research facility is the safety of active reactors and radioactive materials.

Professor Jakub Kupecki, Director of the National Centre for Nuclear Research, quickly moved to reassure the public that the MARIA reactor remains completely secure.

The reactor continues to operate smoothly at full power, completely unaffected by the digital intrusion attempt.

Security systems operated exactly according to established procedures, successfully blocking the attempted network breach.

The rapid response from the facility’s dedicated security teams allowed for the immediate isolation and securing of the targeted infrastructure.

Because these defense mechanisms functioned properly, the attackers failed to disrupt any ongoing scientific research, isotope production, or daily operational processes.

The incident highlights the critical importance of maintaining strict separation between standard IT environments and the operational technology networks that control physical machinery.

Coordinated Government Response

Following the thwarted attack, the research center immediately engaged with national cybersecurity authorities to investigate the source of the incident and reinforce their defensive posture.

The facility is currently coordinating its response efforts with multiple high-level government agencies to ensure that Poland’s critical infrastructure remains protected against complex cyber threats.

Key organizations and officials involved in the ongoing security response include:

  • The Research and Academic Computer Network (NASK-PIB)
  • The Ministry of Digital Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski
  • The Ministry of Energy and Minister Miłosz Motyka

While the initial threat was successfully neutralized, cybersecurity teams and national intelligence services are continuously monitoring the network for any signs of secondary attacks.

Threat actors who target critical infrastructure often employ persistent tactics, making continuous surveillance essential in the days following an attempted breach.

The swift government coordination ensures that threat intelligence gathered from this attack can be used to protect other vital national assets.

The National Centre for Nuclear Research confirmed that it remains fully prepared to handle any future attempts to breach Poland’s digital security perimeters.

By prioritizing rapid incident response and maintaining strong collaborations with federal cybersecurity agencies, the facility successfully protected its critical infrastructure without experiencing any downtime or safety risks.
