Top Cyber Security Certifications That Employers Value Most

Cyber security courses certifications are a credentialing system of sorts that help job seekers to get their foot in the door in an industry that is notoriously difficult to vet using traditional resume information.

However, the existence of a certification does not imply that a candidate is more qualified; the job market does not inherently recognize the validity of all certifications. This document focuses on which certifications a candidate will find the most utility from, due to their market demand, in 2026.

CompTIA Security+: The Most Commonly Held Entry-Level Certification

CompTIA Security+ is the most encountered certification on online job postings, courtesy of its applicability on a global scale. This certification is representative of a holder’s understanding of threats and vulnerabilities, information security, and various means and methodologies of protection.

The exam encompasses Security+ topics as broad as security principles and as advanced as security oversight. Compared to other certifications, Security+ is vendor-neutral, does not include a testing embargo, and is sought by the majority of United States government contracts, as it fulfills a requirement of the DoD 8570 certification for several IT job categories.

CompTIA Security+ is the most favorable option for candidates looking to begin a career in cyber security. The exam charges at a nominal testing fee of $392 and includes no formal requirements. CompTIA recommends at least two years of focus on information security.

CompTIA CySA+: Defensive Security

Those who currently hold a Security+ certification and work on blue teams or in a Security Operations Center (SOC) will benefit from the CompTIA Cybersecurity Analyst, or CySA+, certification. Areas of study include threat and vulnerability management and security operations and monitoring. CySA+ is becoming a requirement for SOC analyst positions, especially at the mid-level and above positions.

CISSP: Senior Security Leadership

The most recognized cyber security certification on the international front is the ISC2 certification of the Certified Information Systems Security Professional or CISSP.

The CISSP certification encompasses eight separate domains designed to cover all areas of the security lifecycle and include the security management and operations domain, creation of secure architecture, communication and network security, access control and security, security review and evaluation, and security in the software development life cycle.

A cost of $749 and the completion of five years of paid work in at least 2 of the eight domains constitute the requirements to hold the CISSP certification.

As the average participant is in a management, architecture, or consulting position within the security field, salaries in the US and often above $130, 000.

CISM: Security Management

The Certified Information Security Manager, or CISM, is a certification offered through the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA) and is designed for security professionals who manage organizational security within the enterprise.

The four domains include governance of information security, managing and governing risk in information security, and developing and managing an information security program and response to incidents.

CISM is highly regarded in especially large enterprises, the financial, and insurance services, environments where security is mainly a governance or risk oriented function. CISM is a designation for professionals in a CISO position or Security Director position.

CEH: Ethical Hacking

The Certified Ethical Hacker from EC-Council is accredited knowledge of legal offensive security techniques. CEH v13 is the current version. This is the first CEH to incorporate AI-assisted ethical hacking techniques in the curriculum.

In the United States, the average salary for individuals with a CEH is about $137,000. CEH is on the U.S. DoD 8570 approved list and is often needed for security positions within government contracts and defense.

OSCP: Practical Penetration Testing

Offensive Security Certified Professional is regarded as the gold standard for practical penetration testing capabilities. Unlike the knowledge exam, an OSCP requires exam candidates to gain access to multiple true to life machines in a 24 hour exam environment and then compile their findings in a professional report.

This makes the OSCP the toughest certification to get, and correspondingly, the most respected by technical hiring managers. OSCP holders are in high demand for red team, penetration testing, and offensive security consulting roles.

A CompTIA Security+ course is an excellent starting point for practitioners entering the cyber security space. From there, the pathway splits whether you are focusing on defense, offense, testing, or security management.

Creating a Certification Stack

Employers appreciate well-rounded and deep credentialing. For example, a defensive security professional might have Security+, CySA+, and work toward CISSP. An offensive security professional might have a baseline of CEH and work toward OSCP.

A security manager might have both a CISSP and a CISM. More important than a random collection of credentials is packaging a coherent stack that articulates your specific niche and your career goals.
